Godzilla vs. Kong has eventually been released after being delayed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. It will be released in the United States on March 31, 2021. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

With the fate of the Earth at risk, "Godzilla vs. Kong" reunites two great foes. A perilous journey brings Kong and his guards to Jia, a small orphaned girl with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla. It is just the beginning of the mystery that lies deep inside the Earth's core.

For a strong energy source, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons employs Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by an anti-gravity field within the tunnel. Walter says Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized aircraft capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Nathan travels to Skull Island to help them find the energy source. He meets his colleague, Ilene Andrews, who is Jia's adoptive mother and a Monarch anthropological linguist. Nathan wants to use Kong as a navigator because Skull Island can no longer hold him and let him live. She says that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off Skull Island, but Ilene at first doesn't want to go. Nathan convinces her that they need to do this mission to stop Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home.

To keep Kong from escaping from the boat, the Apex team is lead by Walter's daughter, Maia, and includes Nathan, Jia, and Ilene. Jia soothes Kong down one rainy night by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's astonishment. Next day, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her adopted daughter after a series of devastating storms killed everyone else in Iwi, including Jia's parents, but Jia was the only one to survive, thanks to Kong's care and protection, leading to the two of them developing an unusually close connection.

As the Titan attacks the military, Jia can sense Godzilla's presence through vibrations in the ship. The barge almost sinks, almost drowning Kong and everyone else inside. When Nathan frees Kong from his chains, he can fight Godzilla underwater for long enough for him to swim to the surface and flip the barge back on its head, saving the group from drowning. Kong jumps onto a nearby aircraft carrier to face Godzilla, who climbs aboard to face Kong. This is how it works: The two titans fight until fighter jets get Godzilla's attention long enough for Kong to push him back into the water. Fires his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong manages to jump off and avoid the blast. Godzilla then wraps his tail around Kong and drags him down into the ocean, intending to drown him.

When Nathan and Ilene realize that Kong will not be able to survive in the cold and that they will not be able to return him to Skull Island, Nathan inquires as to whether Kong will go through the tunnel if he believes there are others like him down there. Ilene responds by telling Jia to inquire as to whether Kong's family may be down there, prompting the Titan to enter the tunnel and the teams to follow him in their HEAVs.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh come into Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry since they suspect Apex is to blame for Godzilla's behavior shift. They slip inside the devastated Apex headquarters together, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie mentioned earlier has vanished. As they find a hidden facility deep down, the gang is mistakenly trapped and carried via an underground conduit to Hong Kong in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs.

The three disembark and find themselves inside a vast black cavern, where they come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla operated by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter throws a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans as soon as the mecha is activated. The Skullcrawler is on the brink of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to slice the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, owing to power supply limits, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down shortly thereafter.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover an ecology that is identical to that of Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by a pair of Warbats while traversing the countryside, with one of the Warbats destroying one of the HEAVs in the process. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second Warbat, knocking it out cold. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong, saving him from certain death. In order for the Warbat to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired by Nathan's squad from their HEAV, allowing Kong to break free and savagely thrash the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's corpse by consuming its intestines.

Kong and Nathan's team start their journey at a stunning stone temple that belonged to Kong's forebears. They find artifacts of an ancient fight between Kong and Godzilla's race on their way inside, and Kong finds an antique axe carved from a deceased Godzilla's race member's dorsal plate. Kong's axe may also be replenished by this power source. Despite Ilene's concerns that Apex cannot simply take the find of the century, Maia and the Apex team capture the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters using spider-like drones. Maia's guards open fire on Nathan's team, but Kong responds with a passionate scream. When Godzilla senses the activation of Mechagodzilla, he races to Hong Kong.

When Godzilla detects Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, he uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the biosphere, forcing the temple to collapse. While Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks, Maia and her team try to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to flee, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan aren't inside, killing Maia and her personnel inside.

Hearing Godzilla's roar as he issues him with another challenge, Kong accepts and proceeds to make his way through the hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong with his axe in hand while Ilene, Nathan and Jia follow him in their HEAV. Upon arriving in Hong Kong and confronting Godzilla, Kong fights him again, this time gaining the upper hand against the Titan to the point he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat to stop him firing his atomic breath. Kong sees that his axe can not only block Godzilla's atomic breath, but can also absorb the blast and injures the Titan in the thigh with his weapon, though Godzilla removes the axe and throws it away. After using the buildings of Hong Kong and his superior agility to dodge and evade Godzilla's attacks, Kong retrieves his axe before bringing his now charged-up weapon down on Godzilla, creating an explosion that knocks both Titans back, making Nathan believe that Kong has won the second round.

Both Kong and Godzilla recuperate and get up, with Godzilla on the lookout for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself atop a tower. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above, placing the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. Godzilla, now that Kong has been restrained and held down, roars fiercely at his opponent in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, roars viciously in defiance of Godzilla.

When Walter returns to the Apex headquarters, he is overjoyed and orders Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to fight Godzilla. Though Ren cautions him against utilizing the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, he dismisses Ren's warning and tells him to activate the mecha without hesitation. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are apprehended by security for invading Apex headquarters and are transferred to Walter's place of confinement. Despite the fact that Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused everything to come to this, Walter boldly says that he took responsibility for providing humanity a chance to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans in the first place.

While Josh and Bernie try unsuccessfully to deactivate the rampaging robot remotely and Madison tries to summon Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle. At one point, both fire their energy beams at each other, which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia detects a slowing of his pulse. Ilene explains that they are unable to produce a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, recalling Maia's earlier statement about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

As Mechagodzilla prepares to fire its crimson energy beam into Godzilla's throat, Kong jumps atop the robot and deflect the beam into the air, thereby sparing Godzilla's life. Godzilla assists Kong in his struggle against Mechagodzilla after realizing Kong saved his life and recognizing an ally in him after witnessing that he is not an opponent.

As much as the Titans try to unite and change the tide, the robot proves to be too powerful for them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual by the robot's tail drill. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of vodka and suggests that they all go out for a drink. The flask Bernie had been holding was snatched by Josh, who had an idea and poured the contents of the flask on the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong the time to recover.

Kong sees Godzilla holding his axe and uses his atomic breath to accelerate it, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb by limb and remove its head before holding up his trophy and relaxing.

Madison reconnects with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see him and invite him onto his program to talk about the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, causing Kong to grab his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack Kong, instead staring him down. Kong lowers his axe, putting an end to the conflict between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on an equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and the rest of the audience looking on.

The site's summary of audience evaluations reflected a similar sentiment, writing that "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, although critics lauded the film's monster brawls, others lamented the film's "half-baked" human aspect. The picture was credited with bringing an end to a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 outbreak, earning an estimated $48.5 million dollars in the United States by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia did not reveal viewership figures for the film on HBO Max, but noted that it was a picture that fans watched several times and had a bigger viewership than any series or feature published on the service since its introduction. Additionally, the picture grossed a whopping $236 million in overseas markets.

This film commemorates the first time in 59 years that Godzilla and King Kong appeared in a film together since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla.

This is Terry Rossio's debut Godzilla film, after his unproduced script for the 1994 feature.

Aside from Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong film, Kyle Chandler has starred in two more films starring King Kong.

The sequence in which Kong slams his right shoulder against a building to reposition it (after it was dislocated previously) might be a nod to Martin Riggs' notorious ability in the Lethal Weapon series.

The film has several references to Neon Genesis Evangelion:
